To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.
You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’
The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.
He must become greater; I must become less.”
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.
He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony.
Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful.
For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.
The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
John 3:27-36
In John 3, a number of people seek out John the Baptist because they want to grow in their faith and understanding of who God is.
John replied with an incredibly important statement, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” And then he immediately points those seeking faith toward Jesus:
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard…
There is an important truth here we should see. One that should compel our action each day.
It is wonderful to read and listen to and learn from those that God has sent to us as pastors and ministers. We ought to be seeking out Bible teachers and spiritual directors and faithful communities that help us grow. The Bible is clear on that (Hebrews 10:25).
But make no mistake, there is no greater voice that we can listen to than the voice of Jesus and His Holy Spirit directly.
Bible teachers are great… but Jesus is greater: For the one who comes from above is above all.
So make room today to focus your faith and attention on Jesus Himself through His Spirit and His Word. He desires to meet with you and connect with you and lead you into all truth and holiness.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. And whoever listens to the Son is led toward an abundant life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am here. Speak to me today through Your Spirit and Your Word. Give me an open heart and ears to hear You clearly. I want to know You. Amen.
