The Promise We Almost Miss

·

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

I was in a church service recently when the pastor read this verse to encourage us. He reminded us of the trials we face—sickness, loss, uncertainty, pain—and assured us that in all of it, God is working for our good. It was a comforting message to hear. No doubt, that is what Paul intended.

And I don’t want to be critical, because he did read the entire verse. But as he continued speaking, I realized he never circled back to perhaps the most important phrase in the entire promise: for those who love Him.

It’s important to notice that Romans 8:28 is not a blanket guarantee for all humanity. It might not even be a guarantee for everyone sitting in that service. The promise of this verse is very specific.

It is a promise for those who love Him.

Some might hear that and think, “Oh great. God expects even more from me?”

But I don’t believe that was Paul’s intention. The Holy Spirit is inviting us to something truly marvelous. He is inviting us to the comfort and confidence that comes with knowing the most powerful being in the universe is working all things for good—and all that is required from us is our love.

In other words, there is no greater place to be than in love with Jesus and His Father who sent Him.

So today, let’s be reminded to place our focus on God. To put Him first in our affections and our attention. And then enjoy all the grace and mercy we discover there.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I love You today. But I want to love You more. Help me do that through the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
