The Study of God

·

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Psalm 19:1-6

There is no greater course of study for our mind than to use it studying the person of God. Who He is, how He acts, and what He requires of us.

Indeed, all other academic pursuits flow from this first exercise.

What is Astronomy? It is the study of where God placed the stars and of His Creation that we have yet to experience. (Isaiah 40:26)

What is History? It is the study of the earthly kingdoms that God has raised up and torn down. (Job 12:23)

What is Science? It is the study of God’s Creation, the laws he put in place to govern it, and His faithfulness in overseeing them. (Psalm 135:6-7)

What is Anatomy/Medicine? It is the study of how God created and knit together our human bodies. (Psalm 139:13)

What is Philosophy? It is the study of wisdom and “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10)

What is Personal Development? It is the study of how to make the best use of the talents, gifts, and breath that were graciously given to us by God again today. (I Thessalonians 5:11)

What is World Religion? It is the study of man’s interaction with God and the counterfeits invented by man’s Great Enemy to distract us from Him. (Ephesians 2:1-3)

Psychology is the study of the mind created by God. Geography is the study of the earth created by God. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics—all study God’s great creation. The list goes on and on. All other academic pursuits flow from this first pursuit: the study of who God is.

There is no greater exercise for our mind and soul than the study and pursuit of God. It is the beginning of all understanding.

Never neglect it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me keep you first in my affections and pursuit. Give me a passion to know you, your ways, and what you desire from me. And then, grant me the strength, through your Spirit, to live out your truth and glory in this world. Amen.
